The other night, I had several business owners over to the house and we were discussing an event that we had organized and setup at together. It wasn't the typical holiday bazaar that I setup at. It was at the community center in my neighborhood and on a Friday evening.
I went into this event with zero expectations and just excited to hangout with friends & neighbors.
The table cost was $35; $20 of which was REFUNDED after the event once the security deposit was returned. Since I wasn't really concentrating on selling, my goal for this event was to collect a few names for my newsletter list and make back the entry fee. Remember: zero expectations.
I landed a whole account, made 10x the entry fee in sales, and had a blast!
Why? Because I checked my attitude at the door.
Subscribers always get the best content first.
Back to the other biz owners, over wine we were talking about one of the other owners at the event. I was asked the impression of her and it caught me off guard. Her booth was on the other side of the room from me so I didn't really have a chance to interact with her. But, I found out about how hurt and degraded the organizer of the event felt because of things that she said. Negative Nancy had complained about the amount of people in attendance, her sales, the lack of tables, having to climb stairs, and the list goes on.
What can we learn from Negative Nancy?
- Your attitude can easily determine your sales. While my sales were much higher than I ever expected, Negative Nancy was having a very Debbie Downer event. People were not drawn to her booth or her lack of energy.
- You might lose out on future events. The past organizer and I are planning a Spring event and Negative Nancy won't be invited back.
- No matter what is going on in your life, when you are at an event, be nice. It doesn't take much. But being nice goes a long way and it will come back to you in the long run.
